In 2013, Haitian-American fashion designer Kerby Jean-Raymond founded the label Pyer Moss. Jean-Raymond describes the brand as an “art project” or “a timely social experiment” at times. Pyer Moss aims to use its voice and platform to challenge social narratives and evoke dialogue.
Jean-Raymond first came into the spotlight for his presentation of Pyer Moss’ Spring 2016 Menswear Collection during New York Fashion Week.
The show highlighted police brutality, referencing the Black Lives Matter movement through the use of video, street art, and fashion.
He also collaborated with R&B singer and activist Erykah Badu who styled Pyer Moss’ AW16 line for the 2016 New York Fashion Week show – “Double Bind.”
Pyer Moss continues to redefine itself every season with collections that combine storytelling, activism, and social commentary; all while using collaboration with artists and brands as a medium to further the dialogue around seasonal themes.
Pyer Moss’s latest collaboration is with footwear giant Reebok. The highly anticipated third installment of the collection, “Reebok by Pyer Moss,” features unique, high-end streetwear that is designed to evoke dialogue.
Inspired by the theme “American Also,” this collection explores the human condition and brings light to forgotten stories.
The concept of Sankofa is integral to the collection. Sankofa is a Twi word from the Akan tribe in Ghana that translates to “Go back and get it” and is represented by a bird, artfully integrated into several key pieces in the collections, fetching an egg from its back.
