Each month, we will present 5 talented indie artists who are breaking barriers and creating interesting music. Here are the artists we’ve selected for May 2014.
Cecily is a talented young vocalist and songwriter who has been influenced by powerful vocalists, songwriters, and trendsetters, such as Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, and Adele. She is currently completing her first EP with Grammy award winning producer and arranger Benjamin Wright, famed songwriter and singer, Vaneese Thomas, and DC rap legend, Tabi Bonney.
Urban Groove Unit
Founded by American guitarist James Startt and featuring soulful vocalist Laetitia N’Diaye, Urban Groove Unit is a tight-knit soul-funk outfit that is destined to become one of your favorite bands.
Dedicated to originality, L’Orange imbues his smoky, soul-soaked tracks with lush texture through inventive mixing and psychedelic cuts from classic radio recordings. He finds his signature samples from pre-1950s jazz, soul and radio. He stitches together a sound that acknowledges his penchant for classic film noir and shadowy motifs.
Krista Tietjen is a multifaceted singer rooted in pop music who combines elements of R&B, hip-hop, rock, and dance to create catchy, memorable songs. Her debut EP, “The Navajo Project” is available now.
Las Supper is a collaboration with Big Daddy Kane and the Hip-Hop fusion band Lifted Crew. Their debut album, “Back To The Future,” is a refreshing take on classic hip-hop and R&B.
