5 Indie Artists You Should Hear – Khiara

Khiara is an Afro-Caribbean artist based in Houston, TX who deftly infuses R&B, Folk, Jazz, Pop, Soul, Dance, Country, Caribbean and Afrikanas music into her songs.

As a young child, Khiara was inspired and encouraged to sing by her mother and grandmother. She started performing at the age of 6 and has been singing ever since. She has performed in the US, Scotland, Canada, France, Finland, China, and throughout the Bahama islands, singing in over 7 different languages.

Khiara has been featured on many Bahamian artist’s albums and has toured in North America as a background vocalist. After gaining additional exposure, she joined the Xtra Band and recorded two smash hit songs with them – “Private Dancer” and the remake of the T-Connection’s 80’s smash, “Best Of My Love”.

She has opened for numerous artists including Fantasia, India Arie, Allison Hinds, reggae superstars; Beres Hammond, Taurus Riley, Capleton, Red Rat, Buju Banton, Morgan Heritage and Beenie Man.

Khiara continues to perform with a local band at private functions, and can also be heard performing her original music at various Houston, TX, festivals and venues, like the Boom Boom Room, The Big Top, and The Continental Club. Her single, “Are You the One,” reached No. 3 on Cross Caribbean Countdown and No. 18 on Chartbase Top 100.

In addition to her singing career, Khiara’s has won two beauty queen titles, Miss Teen Bahamas 2000 and Miss Bahamas Universe 2009.
