Every year, my son and I look forward to Comicpalooza in Houston, TX. We’ve attended the last two events and had a blast. 2013 was a big year for the conference. Not only did the organizers increase the size event, but they also lured top notch talent such as Patrick Stewart and Michele Rodriguez. They also had some informative and entertaining panels and sessions. My son and I participated in fight training, a panel on comic books for moms, sessions on writing and drawing, and performances by Comedy Sports and NWA Wrestling.
Although we enjoyed the content, our favorite thing to do at Comicpalooza is see people dressed up as their favorite superheroes, movie icons, or cartoon characters. Last year we saw several Wolverines, Batmen, and Supermen. In addition, we encountered characters from Doctor Who, Minecraft, Star Wars, and the Nightmare Before Christmas.
We also spent a good amount of time chatting with comic book artists and writers. I especially liked talking to Thom Zahler, creator of “Love and Capes” (Buy this book! You won’t regret it).
This year’s Comicpalooza (May 23-26) promises to be bigger and better. Celebrity guests include Billy Dee Williams, Rose McGowen, Clark Gregg, Lou Ferrigno, James Marsters, Elizabeth Henstridge, Brett Hart, Kevin Nash, and many other actors, artists and writers.
