5 Indie Artists You Should Hear – April 2014

Thanks to the internet, we have access to more songs than ever before. However, the glut of music can make it difficult to find new artists that we really like. As a service to our readers, Mocha Man Style will help you sort through the noise and discover artists worth hearing. Each month, we will present 5 talented indie artists who are breaking barriers and creating interesting music. Here are the artists we’ve selected for April 2014.

Martin Luther

Martin-Luther-mcCoy

I caught Martin Luther’s show a few years ago in a small venue in San Francisco and I was absolutely blown away by his talent. He combines soul, funk and rock in ways that few people would dare (he even had the guts to cover Nirvana’s Heart Shape Box). His latest album, “Love Is The Hero,” is filled with intelligent, hard hitting, music that made him a favorite of the Roots, Dave Matthews, and Jill Scott.

Ihsan Bilal

At age 19, IhsAn joined the D.C. based Black Alley Band. They opened for Kanye West, Jadakiss, Lissen Band and many other local artists. She was also a member of the alternative rock band The Danvilles. But her ultimate goal has always been to be a solo artist. In July 2011, she released her debut album BIG red BOX with the pop and R&B inspired tracks “Lifestyle Ish” and “Big Band Theory.” Her latest album, “T.E.A.L : Time Evolution And Love” hit the Top 100 on iTunes on the R&B chart in 2013.

fDeluxe

fdeluxe

fDeluxe is the band formerly known as The Family. Under Prince’s tutelage, the band released an album that included the hits, “Screams Of Passion” and “Nothing Compares 2 U.” With a new name, the group has reunited to record new music that pays homage to the Minneapolis sound. fDeluxe’s latest album titled ‘AM Static’ is scheduled for release in July 2014.

Cait Cuneo

Cait Cuneo

Cait Cuneo has the kind of soulful voice that makes you stop in your tracks to listen. Her EP, Violet, combines elements of Hip Hop, Soul, and R&B to tell authentic stories about love, triumph, and relationships.

stereosleep

stereosleep

stereosleep is an indie rock band that fuses grunge, punk, garage, and soul. stereosleep began building notoriety in DC by playing clubs such as the Rock and Roll Hotel and Black Cat in Washington, DC. They released their “Dreams and Riots” EP in 2011 and have been touring the East Coast to promote their music.
